Takeaway A: the inbound RAW-MATERIAL markets largely reconfigured (old industries gained a new customer), whereas the layer of "make the equipment / deliver the current / measure it / train people" was entirely new industries born of electricity. The fattest new one is electrical equipment manufacturing (with its patent pool).

Takeaway B: "Light" is a rare case of transforming existing demand (it killed gaslight, but a market for "light" had always existed). Most of downstream, by contrast, is new markets and formats that had not existed before (aluminum, skyscrapers, suburbs, radio, electronics, the cold chain, the supermarket, the Sun Belt). The wildest type is "removing a physical limit" (elevator → height; refrigeration → distance/heat; electrolysis → a new material). Each such node spawned a cascade.

The principle functional schematic (the ladder of abstraction)

Behind the concrete nodes sits a ladder of abstraction. Electricity is a phenomenon; it provides a set of primary functions (by physical nature); from these, devices are assembled; from devices, composites; then applications and industries. This is an "ontology of what the technology CAN DO."

The distinction

  • A primary function = a direct physical conversion of electricity (motor = motion, lamp = light, electrolysis = chemistry). Different in NATURE — these are different "axes of capability." This is the building block / commodity.
  • A secondary/composite technology = assembled from primary ones (elevator, pump, refrigerator, streetcar). Inside the elevator is a motor; the refrigerator = motor + thermal cycle. This is where product value concentrates (the finished appliance).
  • The most powerful is the composite that removes a physical limit (elevator → height) or creates a new environment (refrigeration → distance; electrolysis → a new material).

The same ladder for AI

AI is likewise a phenomenon with a set of primary functions; the value lies not in the function but in the composite.

Strategic takeaway: do not sell the "primary function" (the model = the motor — that is a commodity); assemble the composite "elevator" (the way a refrigerator is built from a motor + a cycle) that removes a limit / creates an environment in a specific industry — and own it. The question for every industry: "where is the elevator here that lifts the height ceiling?"
