Value-capture matrix (electricity, P4 ~1925)

2×2: structural centrality × captured margin. A replacement for the "broken" scatter — a curated selection of key players.

Reading by quadrant: RENTIER (periphery + margin) — capital (Morgan), license (Mazda), patented components (the meter, the Curtis turbine), ALCOA, land developers, RCA. CHAMPION — GE alone (both center and margin: equipment + the lamp patent). PLUMBING (commoditized core) (center, ~0 margin) — copper, coal, generation, the streetcar (loss-making). PIONEERS — Faraday/Tesla/Edison: the source of the cascade, who captured no rent. The Insull holding (✗) captured peak margin but was wiped out in the 1932 collapse.
Takeaway: margin concentrates in the RENTIER quadrant (protected by patent/capital/license), not at the center. Centrality without protection = "plumbing".
